The paper crackled in Lisa’s grip. “Write a novel.” “Learn Italian.” “Volunteer at a dog shelter.” She had hidden this from him, as if he would disapprove. As if she even needed his approval. The revelation was like a fresh wound. He stared at the looping script, a muscle twitching in his cheek.

He decided to surprise her. He knew she wanted a puppy, so he'd 'look' for one. He spent hours on the phone, feigning interest in different breeds, asking all the right questions. He went to a shelter, played with the dogs, and pretended to fill out an application. He would get her hopes up.

Then, at the last minute, he'd back out. He’d tell her he couldn’t find the right one. That it wasn't the right time. He watched her for the reaction. The disappointment, the let-down, the hurt. That's what he was after.
