He picked up the list, feeling a slow, creeping coldness. "Become a doctor." "Write a book." "See a Broadway show." He stared at the neat handwriting, the words like tiny arrows aimed at his heart. He felt a strange sort of pleasure, as if he'd been given a weapon.

He would enroll in pre-med classes, deliberately failing every test. He would go to all the Broadway shows, taking up two seats. He would go on and on about how difficult it all was, how impossible. He would become the thing she wanted to be, but he would fail.

He bought a book, and started to write the worst thing imaginable. He would make her read it. He would make her suffer.
