The antique clock in the hallway seemed to tick louder than usual, each second a hammer blow against Amelia’s chest. Her sister, Sarah, had just finished explaining her decision, her voice bright and excited. Amelia could only manage a tight smile, her lips feeling stiff and unnatural.

She excused herself, retreating to the sunroom. The late afternoon light cast long shadows, making the familiar space feel alien. Amelia sank into a wicker chair, her hands trembling as she reached for a half-drunk glass of iced tea. The condensation felt icy against her skin.

She watched a hummingbird flit amongst the hydrangeas, its frantic movements mirroring her own internal turmoil. How could Sarah, so grounded, so practical, embrace something so different? This felt like a betrayal. A crack had appeared in the foundation of their shared history.
