The pawn shop’s stale air felt heavy, pressing down on David. He felt adrift, untethered. He stood frozen, staring at the ring. It was a cruel twist of fate, finding it here. His grandmother, the woman who had raised him, was gone, and now, a piece of her history was for sale. He felt exposed, all his flaws laid bare.

He felt the prickle of tears behind his eyes. He had nothing left. He'd failed.

"That's... that's my grandmother's ring," he choked out, his voice hoarse. The shop owner, a woman with a perpetually weary expression, simply shrugged.

He knew he couldn’t afford it. He barely had enough to cover rent. He felt a deep, gnawing sense of helplessness, a feeling that had become far too familiar. He wanted to collapse, to crumple into a heap on the floor.

He looked away, his gaze falling on the dusty display cases filled with forgotten treasures. The world seemed to spin.
