The wind rustled through the trees, making the new fence panels creak against each other. Clara sat on the porch step, wrapped in a blanket, even though the air was warm. She’d stayed inside all day, lost in her memories.

The fence, rising between her and her neighbours, was like a physical manifestation of her sorrow. A reminder of what she had lost. Each plank felt like a brick in a wall built around her heart.

She thought of the years she had lived there. The shared laughter, the neighborhood BBQs, the conversations over the hedges. Now, all of that seemed to be gone.
