The vastness of the football field seemed to swell and diminish with each breath. The coach had tapped him on the shoulder after practice, a signal. A shift to a new position. After years of running back, they’d decided to try him at linebacker. He stared at the spot where the coach was standing, the sun in his eyes, feeling a pressure build in his chest. His legs felt heavy, as if weighted down by something invisible. The cheers of his teammates felt muffled, the sounds of their laughter distant.
