The letter lay on the mahogany desk, a formal notice of retirement. He saw his name next to the words "Senior Partner" and then his mentor's: "Retired." No personal message, not even a phone call. He had simply disappeared. The world seemed to wobble beneath his feet.

Mark stared out the window, at the bustling street below. The city, which he thought of as a sanctuary, suddenly seemed cold. He realized that the only person he had truly trusted was gone.

He felt the prickle of tears behind his eyes. He slowly picked up the file on his desk, the weight of the tasks and responsibilities he now held filling him with a sudden, bone-deep weariness.
