The last message from Professor Davies had arrived, as a fleeting email: “Found a new opportunity. Adios.” Sarah had devoted her life to her research, under his guidance. Now, nothing.

Sarah pushed her chair back from the computer, the screen light reflecting in her suddenly empty eyes. She wandered into the lab, the scent of chemicals a sharp reminder of the countless hours she had spent in his presence.

She touched one of the beakers, her fingers brushing the cold glass. She felt a profound sense of abandonment. The path that had always been clear now stretched out before her, undefined, and she wasn't sure if she could continue.
