The wedding was lovely. Everything was picture perfect, except for the tiny, niggling feeling in Eliza’s chest. The air suddenly felt thick, too heavy to breathe comfortably. She kept touching the necklace around her neck, a gift from him.

The music swelled, a joyous fanfare that felt strangely mocking. She'd chosen a dress with a high neckline, hoping to conceal the trembling in her jaw. She watched him across the dance floor, and her chest felt tight, constricted, as if a hand had reached inside and was squeezing.

When he looked her way, she turned away quickly, as if she'd been caught doing something she shouldn't.
