He’d been acting strange lately, more distracted than usual. Maria found herself following him from room to room, a restless energy buzzing beneath her skin. This afternoon, she found him on the balcony, voice hushed, back turned to her. She lingered in the doorway, the scent of jasmine heavy in the air, the sunny day suddenly feeling cold.

He ended the call quickly, flinching as he turned to see her. His eyes, usually bright with affection, flickered with something she couldn't name. It was like a door slammed shut within him.

"Just work stuff," he said, too quickly, forcing a laugh. She didn't believe him. Her throat tightened, a sudden ache. She felt exposed, as if the comforting walls of their life had crumbled. The air felt thin, like she was struggling to breathe.
