The constant buzzing of his phone had become a soundtrack to their lives. He would disappear into the study, the call usually lasting a long time. She found herself tracking his movements, her hand unconsciously reaching for her own phone to check the time. She knew she shouldn't, but the compulsion was a strong current.

One evening, he left his phone on the table. A text message notification popped up, the sender's name a stranger. She stared at the screen, her breath hitching in her chest. The message was short, cryptic, and filled with a feeling she couldn't name.
