The flickering candlelight cast long, dancing shadows on the walls of the small apartment, making the space feel both intimate and claustrophobic. Sarah clutched the worn blanket around her, the familiar weight offering little comfort. John had requested this get-together, a quiet evening to “clear the air.”

She found herself tracing the outline of her coffee mug, a familiar object she'd owned for years. The memory of the museum, the hushed atmosphere, and the stolen glances at the painting was suddenly a chasm between them. He'd been looking at the painting with a certain expression, one that she couldn't quite interpret.

He finally spoke, his gaze locked on the flickering flame. "I felt…" he began, his voice catching slightly, "it didn't feel the same to me."
