Rain lashed against the attic window, mirroring the storm brewing inside her. Sarah pulled the dusty box closer, its cardboard edges softened by time and neglect. Her mother's handwriting, familiar and comforting, danced across the label: "Sarah's School Days." Her fingers trembled as she lifted the lid. Inside, stacked with meticulous care, were all her assignments, from kindergarten scribbles to high school essays. A wave of heat flushed her cheeks. How could her mother have kept everything?

She traced the uneven line of her name on a faded worksheet, the letters a childish attempt at elegance. Her throat tightened. She remembered the sheer mortification she felt as a student.

She sank back onto her heels, suddenly weary. The attic air felt heavy, pressing down on her. The silence, broken only by the drumming rain, was almost unbearable.
