The silence in the car was heavier than the humid air. David stared out the window, watching the familiar landscape blur past. He’d poured his heart and soul into track practice, sacrificing time with his friends, battling through injuries. He'd been sure he'd made the cut for the regional meet.

His dad, sensing his distress, cleared his throat. "It's a tough break, son." His words hung in the air, a clumsy attempt at comfort. David just shrugged, the simple gesture conveying a depth of feeling he couldn't articulate.

The house seemed bigger, emptier than usual. He retreated to his room, slamming the door behind him. He threw himself on the bed, feeling the sudden release of built-up pressure. The posters of his athletic heroes mocked him from the walls.
