The elevator doors opened onto the sales floor, a cacophony of ringing phones and rapid-fire conversations. Sarah, freshly moved from the quiet research lab, felt a lump form in her throat. She gripped her notepad so tightly, the edges were starting to curl.

Her new manager, a man with a dazzling smile and an even more dazzling suit, clapped her on the back a little too hard. "Ready to make some deals, Sarah?" he boomed.

She managed a weak smile in return. The sheer audacity of the task before her, of making cold calls and meeting quotas, felt suffocating. She missed the methodical order of her old job, the way she could hide away in the data.
