Elena slammed the laptop shut, the metallic click echoing in the otherwise silent loft. The critic’s review had been particularly vicious, attacking not just her food but her entire concept.

She felt a hot flush creep up her neck. Her breathing accelerated, shallow and uneven. She stared at the closed computer, as if it were a physical threat. Her fingers started to twitch.

She got up and began to pace the apartment, her steps quick and frantic. The city outside, usually a source of inspiration, now felt distant and indifferent. Everything suddenly felt hollow.
