He took a deep breath, trying to slow the racing of his heart. The air in the attic was thick and stale, a stark contrast to the crisp autumn day outside. He’d just moved in, and the house still echoed with unfamiliar sounds. Now, he was tasked with clearing out the attic, a chore that felt more like an unwanted intrusion.

He found a trunk, its brass clasps tarnished with age. Inside, a collection of photographs. He held them up, squinting at the sepia-toned faces. A young girl, laughing. A stern-faced man in uniform. Their smiles and stories suddenly felt too intimate.

He felt like an uninvited guest, sifting through the remnants of someone else's life. He quickly slammed the trunk shut, the sound echoing in the silent space. A feeling of dread washed over him.
