He had said he was running errands. Liam knew, in his gut, something wasn't right. He'd seen the way his girlfriend, Sarah, had tensed when he’d mentioned he was free tonight. Now, he sat in his car, parked across the street from a brightly lit Italian restaurant, his hands clenched so tightly his knuckles were white.

Through the window, he saw them. Sarah, laughing at something the man across from her had said. He felt a sharp pang in his chest, a sensation akin to a physical wound. The casual touch on her hand. The way she leaned in.

The world seemed to shrink, focusing only on that scene. He started the engine, then switched it off again. He felt a strange combination of fury and complete emptiness. He felt so exposed, sitting in his car.
