The attic stairs seemed to stretch on forever, each creak of the wood echoing in Maya’s ears. She pressed her hand to her chest, feeling the frantic pulse against her palm. Dust motes danced in the single ray of sunlight that pierced the gloom, highlighting the chaos. Boxes overflowed with forgotten memories.

She’d always been the sensitive one, the one who cried easily. Now, surrounded by her grandmother's things, the weight of the past threatened to suffocate her. A fragile teacup, chipped at the rim, caught her eye. She carefully picked it up, her fingers tracing the delicate pattern.

A sob caught in her throat. She sank to the floor, pulling her knees to her chest. The silence amplified her internal turmoil. The house, once a source of comfort, now felt like a labyrinth of hidden emotions.

“Everything okay up there?” Her brother, Daniel's voice, was muffled from below. She hastily brushed away her tears, forcing herself to sound normal. “Yeah, just… dusty.”
