The eviction notice lay on the kitchen table like a death sentence. David hadn't eaten properly in days, his stomach a knot of anxiety. The thought of losing his home, the only place he had left, was paralyzing. He felt like an empty shell.

He saw the wallet while walking home from yet another fruitless job search. He was tempted to ignore it, to keep walking. But something, perhaps pure desperation, made him stop. He took a glance around, and picked it up.

He opened it, and was instantly paralyzed. The sheer amount of money inside was overwhelming. He felt the blood drain from his face. What did he do? Did he give it back? Could he not?
