The world tilted on its axis. Sarah stared at the screen, the notification still blinking, "Potential Parent Match." The words swam before her eyes. For twenty-eight years, she'd believed. Her whole existence, built on a foundation that had crumbled.

She felt a sudden urge to flee, to escape the confines of her apartment. She grabbed her keys and jacket, the movements jerky and hurried. Outside, the city roared, but the noise felt distant, muffled. The familiar streets suddenly felt foreign, alien.

She walked, not knowing where she was going, her footsteps echoing in the empty space of her mind. A coldness settled deep within her, a chill that had nothing to do with the evening air. She pulled her jacket tighter, trying to ward off the sensation of being exposed.
