The house seemed to shrink before her eyes, becoming smaller and less formidable with each passing minute. Eleanor felt a strange disconnect, as if she were watching a movie about someone else’s life. Her skin prickled with a cold sweat. She had spent the last week going through old photos, and the memories were both a comfort and a torment.

She couldn’t meet anyone’s gaze. The approaching workers’ steps sounded amplified, as did their words. The familiar sight of the front yard, the garden, was soon to vanish.

She closed her eyes and took a deep breath. She had to stay. But the ground shifted beneath her feet, and she could barely maintain her balance.
