The email sat in Amelia’s inbox, a stark white rectangle against the usual colorful spam. It was from the university's financial aid office. Her stomach clenched. She clicked it open, her fingers trembling slightly. The subject line was innocuous: "Scholarship Review." The words blurred before her eyes as she scanned the message. There was a mistake. Her scholarship, the one that kept her afloat, the one that allowed her to chase her dreams, was awarded to someone else.

She reread it, each word twisting the knife further. The campus cafeteria, normally buzzing with chatter and the aroma of coffee, suddenly felt sterile, the noise a deafening assault. She pushed back from the table, a sudden need to flee coursing through her. Her breath hitched, catching in her throat, making it difficult to swallow.

The world seemed to tilt on its axis as she stumbled out, bumping into a stranger who mumbled an apology. She mumbled one in return, not making eye contact. The library was her safe haven, but now, it felt like a cage, the weight of the looming situation pressing down on her.
