Gemotions

The harsh fluorescent lights of the kitchen seemed to magnify the tension in the air. John avoided eye contact with David, busying himself with washing dishes, his movements jerky and inefficient. The air felt heavy, saturated with unspoken anxieties.

He picked up a plate, his grip too tight, almost breaking it. The thought of sharing his space with a chirping bird, a constant presence, the noise, the potential mess, the need for constant care… it was too much. The walls of his carefully curated life began to close in.

"It's just a little bird, John," David said softly, misreading his reaction. "We can take care of it together."

John spun around, a defensive posture settling on his shoulders. "I don't know if I'm ready."
