The dim light of the library did nothing to ease the tightness in her chest. For hours, she had carefully crafted a message, a secret declaration of love to a stranger she’d met on a train. The message, however, was now on its way to her boss, a man with a reputation for being ruthless.

Her breath hitched in her throat. Her face felt hot. She could imagine him reading the message, his expression unreadable, and then, the repercussions. She felt trapped, like a bird caught in a gilded cage.
