The model train layout filled the entire basement, a miniature world of towns and railways built meticulously over years. He'd poured his heart into it, constructing bridges, tunnels, and tiny buildings. Now, Alex, his son, was the engineer, controlling the trains with a deftness he could only dream of. He stood at the edge of the layout, watching Alex meticulously arrange the cars. He felt strangely disconnected, an outsider looking in. The familiar sounds of the trains felt distant, almost foreign. He cleared his throat, as if the physical act would somehow break the spell.
