The basement was a labyrinth of forgotten things, the air heavy with the scent of mildew and damp earth. Chloe, the sole heir to her mother's estate, was wading through boxes when she found a small, locked metal box. Inside, amidst yellowed photographs and faded trinkets, was a letter. It was a draft, written on the stationary of a once-respected newspaper. The recipient was the editor-in-chief.

Chloe felt a sudden, sharp pang of something she couldn’t name. Her mother had always been a firebrand, outspoken, always ready to fight. The draft spoke of “moral compromise” and “a loss of faith in the institution.” The final paragraph was a carefully considered, and ultimately, a defeated statement. Chloe felt a sudden, familiar tightness in her chest. She found herself clutching the letter, the paper already beginning to tear in her grip.
