The chipped mug warmed Amelia’s hands as she stared out the window. Rain lashed against the glass, mirroring the tempest inside her. Liam’s words – “California…a fresh start…” – echoed in her head, each syllable a tiny hammer blow. She hadn’t expected this. Not in a million years. The silence in the apartment was deafening, usually filled with their shared laughter and the comforting clatter of Liam’s cooking. Now, it just held the heavy weight of impending separation.

Her breath hitched, and she took a shaky sip of tea. The warmth didn't reach the icy knot in her stomach. She pictured their usual Saturday morning routine – a shared bagel, bad jokes, and a walk in the park. Now, that felt like a distant, fragile memory.
