"Oh, for goodness sake," Amelia muttered, her voice barely above a whisper. The fallen branches, a tangle of green and brown, lay like a dead beast across her patio furniture. It was supposed to be a peaceful afternoon; she had planned to read. She’d bought a new book for the occasion.

She stood frozen, her hand still clutching the door handle, the book forgotten on the kitchen table. The sight felt… overwhelming. She felt the sudden urge to run, to hide. She closed her eyes, trying to force back the familiar burn behind them.

She took a shaky breath. This was her space, her haven. And now, it was invaded.
