The remote cabin was eerily silent, the only sound the crackling fire in the hearth. The letter, slipped under the door, landed with a soft thud on the worn wooden floor. She knew who it was from, even before she picked it up. Her ex-best friend. *I was wrong.* The guilt that had been dormant for so long suddenly surged, a tidal wave of regret.

She turned away from the fire, the warmth suddenly unbearable. She paced the small space, her movements agitated. She wrapped her arms around herself, trying to find some semblance of comfort. The emptiness of the cabin mirrored the hollowness within her.
