The seaside air, usually a balm, felt sharp and biting. He stood on the cliffs, the letter flapping in his hand. It was from his former mentor, a man he'd once revered. *I never saw your potential.* The words were a condemnation, a final judgment. He crumpled it in his fist.

He threw the paper over the cliff edge and watched it disappear into the endless blue. His face twisted with rage and frustration, and he felt a bitter taste in his mouth. He gripped the cold metal railing, fighting the urge to lean over the edge. He clenched his jaw, and finally, he turned and began to walk.
