The news report played on repeat in Emily's mind. She sat on the edge of her bed, her back straight, her hands clasped tightly in her lap. The words, "violent crime," repeated themselves over and over. She felt a cold sweat break out on her forehead.

The house, her pride and joy, her meticulously decorated haven, now felt alien, unwelcoming. Every shadow, every sound, seemed to amplify her unease. The comfortable silence of the night was shattered.

She got up and walked to the window, peering out into the darkness. She was alone, utterly and completely alone. She hugged herself, trying to find some semblance of calm. The thought of sleeping here, alone, filled her with a profound sense of isolation.
