The discovery came as a complete shock. Emily, a half-sister, a secret her father kept from everyone. She sat on her sofa, the inheritance papers from the lawyer’s office crumpled in her hand. The cold, sterile words on the page barely registered. Her world had fractured.

She rose from the sofa and went to the window, the city lights twinkling in the distance. They were so close. She felt a strange mixture of curiosity and dread. She wanted to know more. She did not want to know more. She pulled the curtains closed, wanting to shut it all out.
