The late afternoon sun cast long shadows across the living room as Eleanor reached for the mail. A bank statement, tucked amongst the usual bills, caught her eye. It wasn't addressed to her, but to David. Her hand trembled as she opened it. He’d always handled the finances.

A knot formed in her stomach as she scanned the document. A savings account, one she knew nothing about, with a balance that made her gasp. Thirty-five thousand dollars. She sank onto the sofa, the crisp paper crinkling in her grip. Where had this come from?

David was due home any minute. The air grew thick, heavy. She felt as though she couldn't breathe. What had he been hiding? The silence of the house pressed in around her as the unanswered questions swirled in her head, threatening to drown her.
