It was a chance discovery, hidden amongst the clutter of his desk. A bank statement, addressed to his wife, with a balance that made his breath catch in his throat. He’d never known.

He ran a hand through his hair, his fingers tangling in the strands. The comfortable familiarity of their life together suddenly felt skewed, distorted. He felt the blood drain from his face.

The world seemed to tilt on its axis. He felt a need to flee, to escape this sudden, crushing weight. He sat down heavily, the chair creaking beneath him, the paper crinkling in his hand.
