Rain lashed against the windows, mimicking the frantic drumming in Maya's chest. She jumped at the insistent knocking – three sharp raps. Her breath hitched. She peered through the peephole, recognizing Mrs. Henderson’s pinched face.

Her hands trembled as she unlocked the door. Mrs. Henderson’s lips were a thin, disapproving line. “The music, dear. It’s quite loud.”

Maya stammered, “Oh, I… I’m so sorry. I didn’t realize.” She averted her gaze, tracing the pattern of the peeling wallpaper. A bead of sweat trickled down her temple.

Mrs. Henderson sniffed, her gaze sweeping over the cluttered living room. “Perhaps you could be mindful of the noise levels, especially late at night.” The words hung in the air, heavy and accusing. Maya nodded quickly, her throat tight, as Mrs. Henderson turned and marched back to her own apartment.
