Her hands trembled as she read the professor’s comments. The grade, a discouraging C, was a blow she hadn't anticipated. She was used to being praised, admired. Now, that reputation felt fragile, as though the praise had been built on sand.

She avoided eye contact with her classmates, suddenly aware of the way they might be looking at her. The thought of explaining the grade to anyone filled her with dread. She found herself trying to disappear into the background.

She walked home alone, the brisk air doing nothing to clear her head. The familiar streets felt unfamiliar, and the cheerful sounds of the neighborhood felt mocking. She rushed inside and closed the door.
