The flickering fluorescent lights of the clinic seemed to amplify the pounding in Amelia’s chest. Her hands, clammy and trembling, clutched the worn strap of her purse. Each beep of the heart monitor in the adjacent room felt like a hammer blow against her skull. This was the third specialist she’d seen, each one offering a different, equally terrifying, diagnosis. She’d lost count of the number of blood tests and scans.

A gruff voice cut through her anxieties. “Amelia Hayes?” The nurse, her expression as neutral as the sterile walls, gestured towards a door.

Inside, Dr. Chen was already seated, a file open on the desk. "Please, sit," she said, her tone professional, yet something in her eyes suggested she understood the ordeal. The doctor’s next words would be more unsettling than anything she'd heard yet. "I believe we may have found a shared condition, a rare one. There's another patient here."
