Gemotions

The shovel slipped in her numb hands, sending a jolt of pain up her arm. Maya crouched, her knees screaming in protest, staring at the rectangular metal object in the hard-packed earth. This was supposed to be a fresh start, a clean slate. Moving into the new apartment was meant to be a balm to her wounds. Now, this discovery just felt like another complication.

She brushed the mud off the lid. Inside, she found a handwritten letter, penned in a frantic scrawl, and a faded friendship bracelet. The words were a plea for connection, for understanding. The bracelet brought an ache to her chest, a phantom limb sensation of something lost. She felt an unsettling emptiness opening up inside her.
