The relentless sun beat down on the tarmac, reflecting off the window of the grounded aircraft, turning the cabin into a stifling oven. David peeled his sticky shirt away from his back, a futile gesture against the oppressive heat. He hadn't bothered to eat breakfast, too preoccupied with making his flight. He felt a throbbing pulse at his temples. He needed to find a place to regroup, a chance to breathe.

His brother’s wedding, the culmination of months of planning, was now slipping away from him. He had pictured this day since childhood. David leaned his forehead against the cold window, watching the ground crew milling about. He felt hollow, empty, and defeated.
