The crisp suit jacket felt tight across David's shoulders, a physical restriction reflecting his internal state. He stood near the buffet table, barely touching the food, the vibrant colours of the plates repelling him.

He spotted Olivia, standing near a window, talking to another guest. Every detail of her, from the way her hair fell to the shape of her hands, felt like a painful reminder. The festive atmosphere of the wedding felt alien to him.

She turned, their eyes met, and he felt his stomach lurch. David knew he had to feign composure, or he would crack. He took a deep breath and began to walk, to put on a show.
