The drive home had been torturous, each mile feeling like an eternity to Leo. The traffic, the noise, everything grated on his nerves. He found the house dark, the silence oppressive. Then, a sudden, sharp sound. The chime of a text message.

He saw Lisa’s phone on the coffee table, the screen lit up with a notification. He picked it up, his hand shaking slightly. The message was from an unknown number. He hadn’t meant to pry, but he found himself reading. He felt a strange sort of nausea wash over him, as if something inside had broken.
