The coffee had gone cold, the toast tasted like cardboard. She'd been running on fumes for weeks. Her eyes, bloodshot and gritty, scanned the empty driveway. Where was the old Corolla?

A knot formed in her throat. She ran a hand over her face, rubbing at the tiredness that was etched there. The world swam slightly, a consequence of the late nights and the endless grind.

A bright yellow rectangle confirmed her suspicions. The tow truck was already disappearing down the street. A sudden, sharp ache blossomed behind her eyes. Another hurdle, another obstacle. Just when she thought she might catch a break.
