The office was quiet, the fluorescent lights humming a monotonous tune. David had been hunched over spreadsheets for hours, the numbers swimming before his eyes. Then, the notification: a friend request. From Jessica “The Jinx” Jones. He felt a wave of nausea, a familiar feeling washing over him.

He recalled her cruel pronouncements, the way she had isolated him, made him feel small. He was a successful architect now, but the ghost of his childhood insecurity still haunted him. He rubbed his temples, trying to massage away the tension. He needed something, anything, to distract him from the crushing sensation that settled in his gut. A walk, maybe. Or just a very long nap.
