The afternoon stretched before her, an endless expanse of tasks and deadlines. The knowledge of her junior colleague’s higher salary hung over her like a heavy fog. She found herself watching the clock, waiting for the hands to move.

She’d always been a diligent worker, always eager to please. Now, the motivation seemed to have drained away, replaced by a quiet resentment. She felt, for the first time, a complete lack of any…enthusiasm.

She stared at the spreadsheets, her eyes glazing over. She took a deep breath, the air feeling thin and unsatisfying. The words blurred on the screen. She needed a break. A very long one.
