The air in the dorm room was thick with the scent of cheap air freshener, a futile attempt to mask the general disarray. Amelia felt a profound sense of exhaustion washing over her. She’d spent the whole day trying to organize her thoughts about her recent breakup, and the effort had left her utterly drained. Her journal had been sitting on her desk, and now it wasn't.

She found it under her roommate's pillow, the page open to a particularly vulnerable entry. “Why would you do that?” she asked, her voice cracking. Her roommate, Emily, met her gaze, a look of fleeting guilt quickly replaced by defiance. Amelia turned away, wanting to hide. She felt hollowed out.
