She stared at her reflection in the bathroom mirror. The woman staring back at her was a stranger, the face she had known for decades suddenly alien. She had been adopted. Her life was a meticulously crafted lie.

She splashed cold water on her face, but it did little to quell the rising panic. She ran a hand through her hair, finding it heavy, as if weighted down. Her head throbbed. What to do now? Where to even begin? The questions, like a flock of birds, swirled around in her head.
