The grand piano stood silent in the corner of the living room, gathering dust. It was his grandmother's, a magnificent instrument, now destined for the auction block. His sister, Emily, was distraught, but couldn't seem to stop the sale. He'd found out from his father.

He dragged himself out of bed and looked at himself in the mirror, his reflection a stranger. He felt a growing sense of detachment, a profound apathy that seemed to numb him from the inside out. He had no energy. He slumped back onto the bed, staring at the ceiling, feeling an oppressive sense of hopelessness wash over him.
