The aroma of freshly baked bread filled the kitchen, a stark contrast to the scene unfolding outside. Sarah watched, her jaw tight, as the terrier, Rascal, sniffed at her meticulously tended herb garden. She’d spent the entire morning in the kitchen, exhausted from the baking, and it was the first time she’d been outside all day.

Her stomach churned, and she felt a dull ache in her back. She crossed her arms, a shield against the rising tide of frustration. She had a list of things to do, but all she wanted was to go back to her book.
