The coffee shop buzzed with a caffeine-fueled energy she couldn’t muster. She rested her chin on her hand, the cold ceramic of the mug doing little to soothe the tightness in her chest. Outside, the rain hammered against the windows, mirroring the storm brewing inside. The financial aid office had called, the news delivered with polite regret: a mix-up. Her scholarship, the one that paid for everything, was someone else's.

A deep, involuntary sigh escaped her lips. The words “clerical error” echoed in her mind, a cold, clinical explanation for the dismantling of her future. All the effort, the sleepless nights, the sacrifices— all for nothing? She pushed her untouched coffee aside. The bitter taste of disappointment was too strong.
